Workspace & Channel Administration

Creating workspaces, managing workspace and channel members, retiring channels, and the audit log.

This page is for EOMIS administrators. Messenger administration follows your EOMIS role:

  • Super administrators can create workspaces and administer any channel.
  • Administrators can manage workspace members, view the audit log, and reorder channels. They can administer a channel when they are also that channel's owner or admin.

Inside a channel, members hold one of three channel roles: owner, admin, or member. Whoever creates a channel becomes its owner.

Creating a workspace

Administrators only

Creating a workspace is reserved for super administrators.

Click the plus icon (Create new workspace) at the top of the sidebar. Enter a Workspace name and a Slug (lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only), optionally pick Initial members, and click Create workspace. You become the workspace owner. Each new workspace is seeded with a system Announcements channel automatically.

Managing workspace members

Administrators see a gear icon (Manage workspace members) at the top of the sidebar. It opens the Manage Members dialog, which has three panes:

  • Workspace Details: name, slug, creation date, member count, and status.
  • Current Members: everyone in the workspace; remove people here.
  • Add People: search all users, select one or more, and click Add Selected.

Managing channels

  • Reorder channels: administrators can drag channel rows in the sidebar to set the order everyone sees. Everyone else sees a fixed list.
  • Delete a channel: hover over a channel in the sidebar and click the trash icon, then confirm. The channel is removed from everyone's sidebar. Behind the scenes it is archived, not erased, and the event shows in the audit log as "Channel archived". The workspace's system channel cannot be deleted. This needs an administrator who is the channel's owner or admin, or a super administrator.
  • Post in announcement channels: only channel owners and admins can post there; regular members are read-only. Announcement posts use the rich-text editor.

Pinning and unpinning messages is open to every channel member; see Messages.

Manage Channel Members

Click the member count in a channel header to open Manage Channel Members. The count is clickable only for an administrator who is the channel's owner or admin, or for a super administrator. The dialog has two panes:

  • Current Members: change a member's channel role (admin or member) or remove them. The channel owner cannot be changed or removed here.
  • Add People: search the workspace members who are not yet in the channel, select them, and click Add Selected. For private channels this is the only way in.

The audit log

Administrators see a scroll icon (View audit log) at the top of the sidebar. It opens the workspace Audit log, a feed of administrative events, newest first:

  • members added to or removed from the workspace,
  • channels created, updated, or archived,
  • members added to or removed from a channel, and channel role changes,
  • messages pinned or unpinned.

Each entry shows the event, the date and time, the actor ("by …"), and a short summary of what changed where one was recorded. Only the most recent entries are shown.
