Messages

Writing messages, mentions, attachments, reactions, message actions, and catching up on unread messages.

Writing a message

Type in the composer at the bottom of any channel or conversation. The box grows as you type.

  • Enter sends the message; Shift + Enter inserts a new line.
  • Click the emoji button to open a searchable emoji picker; the emoji is inserted at the cursor. A message that is only emoji is shown enlarged.

Announcement channels use a rich-text editor instead, where Enter does not send. See Announcement channels.

Mentions

Type @ to open an autocomplete list of workspace members. Narrow it by typing, move with the arrow keys, and pick with Tab or Enter (Esc closes the list). Mentions show as highlighted pills, and messages that mention you are emphasized in the feed.

Two special mentions are available: @everyone (notifies all channel members) and @here (notifies those currently online).

When someone mentions you, you get a toast with a View button and a sound (if Notification Sound is on), plus a push notification if enabled, unless you are already viewing that channel or conversation.

Attaching files

Click the paperclip (Attach file) or simply drag files onto the conversation ("Drop files to attach"). You can attach multiple files, up to 25 MB each. While uploading, a progress chip shows "Uploadingโ€ฆ"; you can remove a pending file before sending.

In the feed, images, video, and audio preview inline; other files appear as cards with their size and a download button.

Acting on a message

Hover over a message (or long-press on a phone) to reveal the message actions:

ActionWhat it does
Add reactionPick one of the five quick reactions (๐Ÿ‘ โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ‘Ž) or search the full emoji picker. Picking an emoji you already reacted with removes your reaction.
Reply in threadStarts or continues a thread under this message in a channel; see Threads. In direct messages the action is Reply, a quote reply; see Direct Messages.
Pin message / Unpin messageAdds the message to (or removes it from) the Pinned list. Channel members can pin by default; in direct messages, any participant can.
Edit messageEdit your own message. Each message can be edited once. Afterwards it carries an "edited" marker; clicking it reveals the original text.
Delete messageDelete your own message. It is replaced by "This message was deleted."

Reactions show as grouped pills with counts. Hovering a pill shows who reacted ("You and Alice", "Alice, Bob, and 3 others reacted with ๐Ÿ‘"). Clicking or tapping a pill opens a Reactions panel with a tab per emoji, where you can also select your own reaction to remove it.

Channel notification settings

Click the bell in a channel or conversation header to choose what notifies you there:

  • Use default: follow your notification settings.
  • All messages: notify about everything here.
  • Mentions only: mute the chatter but keep @mentions.
  • Nothing: silence this completely.

Muted conversations keep accumulating unread counts silently.

Catching up

When you return to a busy conversation, a "NEW" divider marks the first unread message and a pill ("N unread messages") lets you jump straight to it. If new messages arrive while you are scrolled up, a "N new messages" pill takes you down to them. If you scroll deep into history, a Jump to present pill returns you to the latest messages.
